My Child, My City

We are proud to care for families in the greatest city in the world. There’s raising kids—and then there’s raising kids in NYC. That’s why we created My Child, My City, a series of articles dedicated to helping families raise healthy children in the city we love. Our goal is to help you tap into all that New York has to offer so your kids can grow up resilient, curious, confident, and healthy—true New Yorkers.  We will kick off the series with our first article on protecting infants and toddlers from noise pollution in NYC.

Little Kids Big Sounds

Out in the suburbs, the big question is often about car seats. In the city, things are a little more complex. One of the first challenges urban parents face? Protecting an infant’s ears.

Whether it’s the shriek of the 6 train at Union Square, a jackhammer on the sidewalk, or the sudden wail of a police siren, NYC is loud. And infants are particularly vulnerable. Their small ears and narrow ear canals make them more susceptible to noise damage, and unfortunately, the kind of hearing loss caused by excessive volume is permanent.

A good rule of thumb: if you need to raise your voice to talk to someone standing next to you, it’s too loud for your baby. Experts typically cite 85 dB as the threshold for potential damage, but frequent exposure to even lower levels can have an impact.

Infant Headphones on the Subway

That’s where noise-canceling headphones come in. Used correctly, they’re an excellent tool for protecting your baby’s hearing. We recommend keeping a pair in your stroller bag and popping them on when the volume spikes. Just be selective about when you use them—babies still need to hear the world around them to build comfort with their environment and support their auditory development.

How Well Do You Understand Measles: The Measles Quiz

As a resident (many moons ago), there was a case of measles at our hospital.  It was big news.  The disease had been all but eradicated by the MMR vaccine and this was a rare chance to see the disease beyond the pages of our textbook.  Now, due to vaccine skepticism in pockets of the country, we are seeing outbreaks of this deadly virus again.  We are including a link to a measles quiz to empower you with knowledge about this re-emerging infectious disease.

These days, there are many unfounded and misleading soundbites about vaccines. At Premier, we feel that it is our responsibility to guide our community to trusted sites to learn about these lifesaving tools.  Please take a moment to review the following link that describes the rigorous scientific process that drives the creation of our recommended vaccines.
